TerraClassicUSD (USTC): A Comprehensive Guide

What is TerraClassicUSD (USTC)?

TerraClassicUSD (USTC) is the rebranded version of what was formerly known as TerraUSD (UST), an algorithmic stablecoin that was designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US dollar. Following the collapse of the Terra ecosystem in May 2022, UST was renamed to TerraClassicUSD (USTC) to distinguish it from the new Terra ecosystem that emerged after the network fork. USTC operates on the Terra Classic blockchain, which is the original chain that continued after the creation of the new Terra 2.0 network.

How Does TerraClassicUSD (USTC) Work?

Originally, TerraClassicUSD (USTC) maintained its price stability through an algorithmic relationship with LUNA (now LUNC, or Luna Classic). The mechanism worked through a mint-and-burn process:

• When USTC's price exceeded $1, users could burn LUNC to mint USTC, profiting from the price difference while increasing USTC supply to bring its price down.
• When USTC's price fell below $1, users could burn USTC to mint LUNC, reducing USTC supply to push its price up.

However, after the collapse in May 2022, this mechanism failed and USTC lost its peg to the US dollar. Currently, USTC operates without its algorithmic stabilizing mechanism and trades as a volatile cryptocurrency without being pegged to the dollar.

USTC Staking and Mining

TerraClassicUSD (USTC) itself doesn't offer traditional staking or mining opportunities. Unlike proof-of-work cryptocurrencies that require mining, USTC was created through the mint-and-burn mechanism with LUNC. Currently:

• No Mining: USTC can't be mined as it wasn't designed as a proof-of-work cryptocurrency.
• Limited Staking Options: USTC itself doesn't have native staking. However, some platforms might offer yield-generating opportunities for USTC holders through lending or liquidity provision.
• LUNC Staking: While USTC doesn't have staking, its companion token LUNC (Luna Classic) does offer staking opportunities within the Terra Classic ecosystem where validators can earn rewards.

What is TerraClassicUSD (USTC) Used For?

Before the depeg event, USTC (then UST) served as a stablecoin for various purposes in the Terra ecosystem:

• Store of value expected to maintain dollar parity
