Understanding POL (ex-MATIC): The Native Token of Polygon

POL, formerly known as MATIC, is the native cryptocurrency token of the Polygon network. In February 2024, the Polygon ecosystem underwent a rebranding effort where the MATIC token officially became POL, aligning the token name more closely with its parent network, Polygon.

What is POL (ex-MATIC)?

POL (POL) serves as the utility token that powers the Polygon ecosystem. Polygon is a protocol and framework for building and connecting Ethereum-compatible blockchain networks. Often referred to as "Ethereum's Internet of Blockchains," Polygon aims to address some of Ethereum's limitations such as high gas fees, poor user experience, and limited throughput, without compromising on security.

The rebranding from MATIC to POL represents Polygon's evolution from a simple scaling solution to a comprehensive ecosystem of interconnected blockchains. While the ticker symbol changed, holders of MATIC tokens automatically received POL tokens at a 1:1 ratio, ensuring a seamless transition for all users and investors.

How Does POL Work?

POL (ex-MATIC) functions as the central token within the Polygon ecosystem, facilitating various operations:

  • Governance: POL holders can vote on Polygon Improvement Proposals (PIPs), influencing the direction of the network
  • Gas payments: POL is used to pay for transactions on the Polygon network
  • Staking: POL can be staked to secure the network and earn rewards
  • Protocol fees: Various functions within the Polygon ecosystem require POL to operate

The Polygon network employs a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, where validators stake their POL tokens to participate in the network's security and transaction validation process.

POL Staking and Mining

POL offers staking but does not support traditional mining. Here's how the staking system works:

Staking POL: Users can stake their POL tokens to help secure the network and earn rewards. There are two ways to participate in staking:

  1. Becoming a Validator: By running a validator node and staking a substantial amount of POL (currently at least 10,000 POL tokens), users can validate transactions and create new blocks. Validators earn both transaction fees and staking rewards.
  2. Delegating to a Validator: Users with smaller amounts of POL can delegate their tokens to an existing validator and earn a portion of the rewards, minus a commission fee taken by the validator.

POL staking rewards are generated from transaction fees and newly issued tokens. The annual yield typically ranges between 5-14%, depending on various factors including the total amount of POL staked across the network.

No POL Mining: Unlike proof-of-work cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, POL cannot be mined using computational power. All validation on the Polygon network happens through staking, making it significantly more energy-efficient than mining-based cryptocurrencies.

What is POL Used For?

POL (ex-MATIC) serves multiple purposes within the Polygon ecosystem:

  • Network Security: POL is staked by validators to secure the network
  • Transaction Fees: Users pay gas fees in POL for transactions on Polygon
  • Governance: POL holders can participate in on-chain governance decisions
  • Dapp Interactions: Many decentralized applications on Polygon require POL for various functions
  • Incentivization: POL rewards incentivize validators and delegators to maintain network security

As the Polygon ecosystem continues to expand with various solutions like Polygon PoS, Polygon zkEVM, Polygon Supernets, and more, the utility of POL grows alongside it.

POL Token Distribution and Launch

The POL token (originally launched as MATIC) was initially distributed through an Initial Exchange Offering (IEO) on Binance Launchpad in April 2019. The original distribution was as follows:

  • Token Sale: 16% of the total supply was sold during the IEO and private sales
  • Team: 16% allocated to the founding team with a vesting period
  • Advisors: 4% allocated to project advisors
  • Network Operations: 12% reserved for network operations
  • Ecosystem: 23% allocated for ecosystem development
  • Foundation: 21.86% reserved for the Polygon Foundation
  • Staking Rewards: 7.14% reserved for staking rewards

The total supply of POL is capped at 10 billion tokens. During the rebranding from MATIC to POL in 2024, no new tokens were created; existing MATIC tokens were converted to POL at a 1:1 ratio.
