Understanding Sai (SAI): The Precursor to Dai

Sai (SAI) was one of the first decentralized stablecoins in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, developed by MakerDAO. As a stablecoin, Sai (SAI) was designed to maintain a value pegged to the US dollar, offering stability in the volatile crypto market. While Sai has since been upgraded to Dai (DAI), understanding its pioneering approach to decentralized stablecoins remains valuable for cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

What is Sai (SAI)?

Sai (SAI) was a decentralized stablecoin that maintained its value through a system of smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. Unlike centralized stablecoins that claim to be backed by fiat reserves, Sai (SAI) used a collateral-backed system where users locked up Ethereum (ETH) in smart contracts to generate the stablecoin. This made SAI one of the first truly decentralized stablecoins in the cryptocurrency market.

In November 2019, MakerDAO transitioned from the single-collateral Sai to the multi-collateral Dai system, effectively phasing out SAI in favor of the more robust DAI token.

How Did Sai (SAI) Work?

Sai (SAI) operated through a complex system of smart contracts known as the Maker Protocol. Here's how it functioned:

  1. Collateralization: Users would lock up ETH (the only accepted collateral) in smart contracts called Collateralized Debt Positions (CDPs).
  2. Minting: Based on the value of deposited ETH, users could generate Sai tokens, typically requiring overcollateralization (more than 100% of the value in ETH).
  3. Stability Mechanisms: The value of SAI was maintained through a complex system of incentives and the Stability Fee, which acted like an interest rate.
  4. Price Feeds: Decentralized oracles provided price information to ensure the system responded to market conditions.

This system created a decentralized stablecoin that wasn't directly backed by USD but maintained its peg through collateralization and market mechanisms.

Did Sai (SAI) Offer Staking and Mining?

Sai (SAI) did not support traditional mining or staking as seen in proof-of-work or proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies. Instead, the Maker ecosystem offered different ways to participate:

  • CDP Creation: Users could lock ETH to mint SAI tokens, essentially participating in the system's operation.
  • MKR Token Governance: While not directly related to SAI, holders of the MakerDAO governance token (MKR) could stake their tokens to vote on protocol parameters affecting SAI.
  • Lending Markets: SAI could be lent on various DeFi platforms to earn interest, though this wasn't native staking.

SAI's value proposition wasn't based on mining rewards or staking yields but rather on its stability as a decentralized dollar-pegged asset.

What Was Sai (SAI) Used For?

Sai (SAI) served several important functions in the cryptocurrency ecosystem:

  • Stability Hedge: Traders used SAI to protect against market volatility, converting volatile assets like ETH into stable SAI during market downturns.
  • DeFi Applications: SAI was one of the first stablecoins used in decentralized finance applications, enabling lending, borrowing, and other financial activities.
  • Trading Pair: Many decentralized exchanges used SAI as a trading pair, providing a stable alternative to ETH pairs.
  • Cross-Border Transfers: SAI could be sent quickly across borders without the volatility risk associated with other cryptocurrencies.
  • Store of Value: Users in countries with unstable currencies could hold SAI as a more stable alternative to local currency.
The Distribution and Launch of Sai (SAI)

Unlike many cryptocurrencies, Sai (SAI) didn't have an ICO (Initial Coin Offering) or token sale. The distribution model was entirely different:

  1. Permissionless Creation: Anyone could create SAI by depositing ETH collateral in a CDP.
  2. No Pre-mine: There was no pre-mined supply of SAI; all tokens entered circulation through the CDP mechanism.
  3. Organic Growth: SAI's supply grew organically based on market demand and user adoption.

The SAI token was launched in December 2017 as part of the Maker Protocol. Its distribution was entirely market-driven, with users creating SAI by locking ETH in the system, rather than through a centralized token sale or allocation.

The Legacy of Sai (SAI)

Although Sai (SAI) has been replaced by the multi-collateral Dai system, its importance in cryptocurrency history cannot be overstated. As one of the first decentralized stablecoins, SAI pioneered concepts that are now fundamental to DeFi:

  • Overcollateralized lending
  • Decentralized price oracles
  • Algorithmic stability mechanisms
  • Governance-controlled risk parameters

The lessons learned from SAI directly informed the development of DAI and many other DeFi protocols that followed. For cryptocurrency historians and enthusiasts, understanding Sai (SAI) provides valuable insights into the evolution of decentralized finance.
