This is the Post-TGE Valley of Death.

An analysis of 125 token launches in 2025 found that 85% ended the year negative. More sobering: a negative first week was nearly fatal, with only 9.4% of tokens that declined in their opening week recovering to positive returns by year-end.¹ The launch window sets trajectory. But the Valley is where trajectory becomes destiny.

The market has changed. On March 17, 2026, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued a joint interpretation clarifying how federal securities laws apply to crypto assets and certain transactions involving them.² For the first time, the Commission formally classified digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, and stablecoins, and clarified that protocol staking, protocol mining, wrapping, and qualifying airdrops are not treated as securities transactions under the outlined framework.³

This development is a structural tailwind for teams navigating post-TGE growth. Staking programs, ecosystem airdrops, and governance participation are some of the exact mechanisms that drive TVL growth and community activation post-TGE. Teams now have a clearer regulatory runway than at any point in crypto’s history.

1. Manage unlocks like a treasury event

The most common post-TGE mistake isn’t a bad product or a weak community. It’s treating token unlocks as administrative tasks rather than market events that require operational preparation.

Analysis of over 16,000 unlock events found that 90% were followed by price declines, with team unlocks causing the steepest drawdowns, averaging -25% over 30 days. Markets begin pricing in anticipated selling approximately 30 days before each cliff.⁴ By the time an unlock arrives, the damage is often already underway.

The protocols that manage this well treat every unlock the way a public company treats an earnings release: with preparation, coordination and proactive communication.

What that looks like operationally:

  • Establish OTC relationships and TWAP/VWAP execution strategies before the first cliff, not after a drawdown when terms are materially worse

  • Coordinate across team members so individual sell pressure doesn’t compound into cascading price impact

  • Communicate unlock schedules publicly and in advance. Silence gets filled by speculation, and on a public blockchain, wallet watchers will often fill it unfavorably.

  • Monitor the 30-day window before each cliff and have a response plan ready; don’t wait for community questions to shape the narrative

On a public blockchain, every token movement is visible. Routine treasury activity like market maker allocations, internal rebalances and grant disbursements gets categorized by wallet watchers as sell pressure regardless of intent. Teams should label treasury wallets publicly before TGE, communicate the purpose of significant movements before they occur and assume that any unexplained transfer will be narrated by third parties in the least favorable light.⁵

The Commission explicitly clarified that protocol staking, including custodial staking arrangements, self-custodial staking with third parties, and liquid staking, is not treated as a securities transaction under the outlined framework.⁶ Staking Receipt Tokens issued in liquid staking arrangements are similarly not securities, provided the underlying asset is a non-security crypto asset not subject to an investment contract.⁷

This matters operationally. Protocols can now design and promote staking programs with greater confidence, knowing that custodial staking arrangements, where a qualified custodian stakes on behalf of institutional depositors, are explicitly outside the securities framework. For institutional participants, this removes a major source of ambiguity that previously caused hesitation around staking participation.

What post-TGE staking activation looks like:

  • Staking delegation operational and thoroughly tested before TGE, with support confirmed across institutional custodians. Institutional participants will not stake through interfaces that expose them to key risks.

  • Governance participation enabled through custody-compatible interfaces from day one.

  • Reward transparency and automated compounding where the protocol supports it.

  • Clear documentation of validator selection, minimum stake requirements, and unbonding periods so institutional participants can model their exposure before committing.

Protocols that treat staking as infrastructure from day one attract longer-term capital. Those that bolt it on post-launch face an onboarding backlog at exactly the moment when early participants are most engaged.

Analysis of 2025 token launches showed that tokens with fewer, higher-quality exchange listings outperformed those spread across many venues. Depth is a function of concentration, and the protocol’s relationship with each exchange determines whether that depth is maintained post-launch or allowed to atrophy.⁸

Fundraising after a TGE is structurally more involved; the primary product is now community-owned, additional token sales carry legal risk, and investors evaluate post-launch performance rather than projected momentum.¹⁰ Selling tokens into a thin market to fund operations is one of the clearest signals to institutional observers that a team is exiting rather than building.

The SEC/CFTC interpretation provides useful clarity here as well. Qualifying airdrops, those where recipients do not provide money, goods, services, or other consideration in exchange for the airdropped asset, do not involve an investment of money under the Howey test and therefore do not constitute securities transactions.¹¹ This gives protocols distributing ecosystem grants, rewarding early contributors, or activating community programs a clearer operational framework than previously existed.

What operational ecosystem growth looks like:

  • Milestone-based developer grants rather than upfront allocations. Token grants tied to real outputs compound network effects; grants that front-load capital without accountability drain the ecosystem fund.

  • Programmatic incentive programs that reward sustained behavior, including liquidity provision, governance participation, and protocol usage, rather than one-time launch activity. Hyperliquid’s approach, where airdrop allocation scaled with trading fees paid, is the clearest recent example of an incentive structure that aligned distribution with genuine protocol engagement.¹²

  • Continued decentralization progress as both a regulatory and growth priority. The more independently the ecosystem develops through third-party developers, diverse validators, and community-led governance, the more credibly the protocol demonstrates that its value isn’t dependent on a single team’s ongoing efforts.

  • Governance activation. Low quorum and low participation are the most visible signs of a stalled protocol. Governance tooling that makes participation accessible across custody solutions, with clear proposals and transparent execution, turns token holders into stakeholders.
